Veterans Day event at The Groves honors and commemorates U.S. servicemen and women

Ashlar Development and The Groves, one of Houston’s most sought-after master-planned communities, located in northeast Houston, hosted a Veterans Day ceremonyduring the community’s weekly farmer’s market on Sunday, November 10. The event included a statue dedication, recognition of resident veterans and a flag ceremony, in commemoration of the courageous individuals who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
Residents and members of the public attended the event to honor those who have served in the U.S. armed forces, in recognition of Veterans Day on November 11. More than 15 residents of The Groves were recognized for their service at the ceremony, led by Pete Garcia, Construction Manager – Houston, Ashlar Development, who served in the U.S. Marines.
During the ceremony, The Groves presented Carlos Garza, a resident of Atascocita, with a token of appreciation for his honorable service in the Vietnam War. Garza was among the few soldiers to fearlessly infiltrate the Viet Cong’s underground tunnel systems, which were oftentimes rigged with deadly explosives. He was nicknamed “Carlos Garza, American Tunnel Rat” for his bravery in a situation with an average life expectancy of two seconds. Among his numerous medals, he has been awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic achievement and a Purple Heart for his injuries suffered from a mine explosion.
The Groves is home to dozens of veterans and has an active veteran’s group. In 2018, the community dedicated a lot to the Greater Houston Builders Association to build a new, custom-built and mortgage-free home to a local veteran family through a partnership with Operation Finally Home, a non-profit that provides homes to America’s military heroes.
